Why vaccinate before you travel?
Many of the infections that are rare in the UK — typhoid, hepatitis A, rabies, Japanese encephalitis — are still common in parts of Asia, Africa and Latin America. They spread through everyday things: food and water, insect bites, contact with animals. Vaccination is the simplest, most reliable way to take those risks off the table before you board the plane.
The right vaccines depend on far more than the country on your ticket. Our clinicians look at your whole trip and your own health before recommending anything:
- Where you are going — including stopovers, rural areas and border requirements.
- What you will be doing — a resort stay, trekking, volunteering and visiting relatives all carry different risks.
- How long you are away — longer stays and repeat trips often change what is advised.
- Your own health — age, pregnancy, medical conditions, medicines and the vaccinations you have already had.
Everything we recommend follows current NHS and TravelHealthPro (NaTHNaC) guidance — and if a vaccine is not needed for your trip, we will tell you that too.

Spread through contaminated food and water. Advised for much of Asia, Africa and Central & South America.
Hepatitis B
Three-dose course
Spread through blood and bodily fluids. Worth considering for longer stays, healthcare placements and adventurous travel.
Hepatitis A & B combined (Twinrix)
Three-dose course
One course that covers both viruses — a convenient option if your trip calls for protection against each.
Typhoid (Typhim Vi)
Single dose
Spread through contaminated food and water — particularly relevant for the Indian subcontinent, Africa and parts of Latin America.
Rabies
Three-dose course
Pre-exposure protection if you will be around animals, trekking, cycling or travelling far from reliable medical care.
Meningitis ACWY
Single dose
A visa requirement for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, and advised for parts of sub-Saharan Africa during the dry season.
Japanese encephalitis (Ixiaro)
Two-dose course
A mosquito-borne infection found in rural parts of Asia — relevant for longer stays and countryside itineraries.

Two-dose oral course
A drinkable vaccine for higher-risk trips — backpacking, volunteering or humanitarian work where sanitation is limited.

Which travel vaccinations do I need for my trip?
It depends on where you are going, how long for, what you will be doing and your own medical history. A beach resort holiday carries different risks from backpacking or visiting family in rural areas. When should I book my travel vaccinations?
Ideally six to eight weeks before you travel. Some vaccines, such as hepatitis B, rabies and Japanese encephalitis, are given as a course of two or three doses spread over several weeks, and your body also needs time to build protection. That said, it is almost never too late to benefit — if you are leaving soon, come in anyway and we will prioritise the vaccines that still give you worthwhile protection in the time available.
Can I have several vaccines in one appointment?
Yes. Most travel vaccines can safely be given at the same visit, so one appointment usually covers everything your trip needs. If a sensible gap between certain vaccines would work better for you, our clinician will explain why and plan the schedule with you. Families and groups travelling together can also be seen in a single booking.
Do I need a prescription or a GP referral?
No. We are a GPhC-registered pharmacy (registration 1029608), and our NHS-trained clinicians carry out the risk assessment and give your vaccinations on site — no GP appointment, referral or prescription needed. If you have a record of previous vaccinations, bring it along so we do not repeat anything unnecessarily.
How much do travel vaccinations cost?
Each vaccine is priced per dose, and you only pay for what our clinician actually recommends after your risk assessment. Single-dose vaccines such as typhoid cost £35 per dose. You can see the full, transparent price list for every vaccine we offer on our vaccine prices page.
Are travel vaccines safe? What side effects should I expect?
Travel vaccines are well established and widely used. Most people have no more than a sore arm for a day or two; some notice mild tiredness, a headache or a slightly raised temperature, which settles quickly. Before vaccinating, our clinician reviews your medical history, allergies, medicines and any pregnancy, and will talk you through exactly what to expect.
Do you offer yellow fever vaccination and certificates?
Yes. Crewe Travel Clinic is a Registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre, so we can give the yellow fever vaccine and issue the internationally recognised ICVP certificate that some countries require at the border.
