For most trips, ensure routine UK vaccinations (tetanus, diphtheria, polio, MMR) are current. Hepatitis A and typhoid are recommended for all backpackers, as both spread via contaminated food and water. Hepatitis A is a course giving long-term protection; typhoid is a single injection protecting around three years. Yellow fever is a serious mosquito-borne risk in tropical areas of Brazil, Peru, Bolivia and Colombia. Stamaril (single dose) now gives lifelong protection, and the ICVP certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination—required for border crossings between affected countries. Malaria risk is mainly in lowland and Amazon regions, not high cities; antimalarial tablets depend on your exact route. Regardless of tablets, bite avoidance protects against dengue, Zika and chikungunya too. Use DEET-based repellent, cover up at dawn and dusk, and sleep under nets where needed.
Popular destinations like Cusco, the Inca Trail, La Paz and Lake Titicaca sit above 2,500–3,500 metres. Altitude sickness is common and can affect anyone. Ascend gradually to acclimatise; avoid flying to a high city then trekking higher the same day. Mild symptoms (headache, nausea, tiredness, poor sleep) usually pass with rest; severe breathlessness or confusion requires immediate descent and medical help. For longer trips or remote areas, rabies vaccination is relevant due to dogs, bats and other mammals; no pre-travel vaccine may mean complex treatment if bitten. Hepatitis B becomes more relevant for long stays, healthcare work, tattoos or new partners. Avoid swimming in fresh lakes and slow rivers (schistosomiasis risk). Maintain strict food and water hygiene and arrange travel insurance covering your activities and altitude.

There is no vaccine for travellers, so prevention relies on antimalarial tablets and mosquito bite avoidance.

Typhoid FeverTyphoid fever is a serious bacterial infection caught from food and water contaminated with the bacterium Salmonella Typhi. It is a risk in areas with poor sanitation, particularly the Indian subcontinent, and travellers prevent it through scrupulous food and water hygiene combined with typhoid vaccination.
RabiesRabies is a viral infection of the nervous system, spread through the saliva of infected animals, most often by a bite, scratch or lick on broken skin. It is found across Asia, Africa and parts of the Americas, and is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. Dengue FeverDengue fever is a viral infection spread by daytime-biting Aedes mosquitoes across the tropics and subtropics. Most travellers prevent it through diligent mosquito-bite avoidance, with a vaccine available for selected travellers who have had dengue before.
Zika VirusZika virus is a mosquito-borne infection that is usually mild but can cause serious birth defects if a woman is infected during pregnancy. There is no vaccine, so prevention relies on mosquito-bite avoidance, careful pregnancy and travel planning, and avoiding sexual transmission.
